Lebanese Market Size and Key Industry Sectors

Lebanon has a population of approximately 5.5 million and a services-led economy with a long-established manufacturing base. Nominal gross domestic product has been in the region of USD 20 to 25 billion, and the economy has contracted sharply since 2019, which has reduced domestic consumption while leaving the industrial capability intact. For equipment suppliers the practical picture is a market where plants are older, technical staff are experienced, and purchasing decisions are made conservatively with close attention to durability, serviceability and the cost of a second unit.

The relevant sectors are paints and coatings, printing inks for the packaging and label sector, cosmetics and personal care, food processing, and pharmaceuticals. Construction chemicals and adhesives also remain a meaningful category. These are precisely the formulations where Lebanon has historically exported regionally, and where product quality rather than price has been the competitive basis.

That export orientation shapes equipment specification. Plants supplying regional markets must hold consistent colour strength, gloss and fineness batch after batch, which makes the finishing stage the critical one. A hydraulic triple-roll mill remains the reference for high-viscosity inks and pigment pastes where a bead mill cannot hold viscosity, while a disc-type bead mill is the right choice for lower-viscosity paints and coatings that must reach sub-micron fineness at volume.

Industrial supply is 400 V / 50 Hz three-phase, with 240 V single-phase for smaller installations. Import clearance runs through the national standards body, and conformity documentation is supplied with the machine. Typical orders pair a basket mill for flexible small-batch work with a planetary mixer for high-viscosity pastes, feeding an ink line or a paint line.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions About Ordering from Lebanon

How long does delivery to Lebanon take?

Sea freight from Shanghai to Beirut typically takes 22 to 26 days subject to sailing schedules and port availability. Air freight for urgent spare parts takes 6 to 8 days. Inland movement from Beirut port to a plant in the capital or the Bekaa is a short road movement.

What payment terms are available?

Telegraphic transfer with a deposit and balance against shipment is standard. Irrevocable letters of credit at sight are accepted for larger turnkey lines. Terms are agreed during quotation and confirmed in the sales contract.

Is the equipment compliant with Lebanese standards?

Machines are CE certified and supplied with the full technical file. Lebanese national standards are administered by the national standards organisation, and where a category requires conformity documentation we supply the declarations, drawings and test reports the importer of record needs. The importer should confirm the requirement for the specific machine category.

What voltage and frequency is the equipment built for?

The standard build is 400 V / 50 Hz three-phase for industrial installations, with 240 V single-phase available for smaller units. Control panels can be specified for the local earthing arrangement.

How long is the warranty?

The standard warranty is 3 years from shipment or from commissioning, whichever the contract specifies, covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal operating conditions. Wear parts and damage from operation outside specified parameters are excluded, with exclusions stated in the contract.

Can you supply spare parts to Lebanon?

Yes. We hold wear and spare parts for machines in service and dispatch worldwide within 24 hours of a confirmed order. Common items such as seals, grinding beads, filter elements and dispersing discs are stocked for faster delivery.

Do you provide installation and commissioning?

Engineers are available for on-site installation, commissioning and operator training. For single machines we can also support remote commissioning with a site technician, which is often the more economical route.

Do you have a local agent in Lebanon?

We work with regional partners and can introduce a partner covering your area during the quotation stage so that you have a local point of contact for service after handover.

Can you provide references from other regional customers?

We can provide references and installation details on request during commercial discussion, subject to the confidentiality terms agreed with each customer. Application case studies are published on our case-studies page.

What documentation is provided with the equipment?

English manuals, the CE technical file, general arrangement and interface drawings, electrical schematics, material certificates and factory test reports are supplied as standard. Spare-parts lists and recommended maintenance intervals are included.

How do you handle after-sales service given the distance?

Remote diagnostics are the first step, supported by video inspection and data logging. Where physical attendance is needed we coordinate a service engineer, and most common faults are resolved by replacing a stocked spare part.

What is the typical payback period for equipment in Lebanon?

Payback depends on capacity utilisation, labour cost avoided and yield improvement rather than on a fixed figure. For plants exporting regionally, consistent quality is usually the larger contributor, because it protects the customer relationships that justify the investment.

Market Overview

Economic and Industrial Profile

Lebanon has a population of approximately 5.5 million and nominal gross domestic product in the region of USD 20 to 25 billion. The economy is services-led, with banking, trade and services historically accounting for the majority of output, while manufacturing has contributed roughly a tenth. The economy has contracted sharply since 2019 and purchasing power has fallen, but the industrial base and its technical capability remain in place.

Industrial geography is compact. Beirut and its immediate suburbs hold the majority of paint, ink, cosmetic and food manufacturing, with Tripoli serving the north, Sidon and the south serving the southern market, and Zahle in the Bekaa holding a smaller cluster. This compactness is an advantage for equipment suppliers: inland haulage from Beirut port to a plant is rarely more than an hour, which simplifies delivery and makes on-site commissioning visits short and inexpensive.

The coatings and inks sectors have historically exported regionally, competing on quality and formulation expertise rather than on price. Cosmetics and personal care is a long-established export category. Food processing serves domestic and regional demand, and pharmaceuticals is a smaller but technically demanding segment. Construction chemicals and adhesives track domestic construction activity.

For equipment buyers, the practical consequence of the market conditions is a preference for durable, serviceable machines with a low cost of ownership over the lowest purchase price. Plants are typically experienced and will evaluate a machine on its mechanical design, the availability of wear parts and the clarity of its documentation rather than on headline specifications.

Import Regulations

Customs and Standards Documentation

Lebanon applies a tariff schedule based on the Harmonised System, with duty assessed ad valorem against the customs value declared to customs. Industrial machinery under Chapter 84 generally attracts lower duty rates than finished goods, consistent with the pattern in most markets that protect downstream manufacturing. Because rates and any temporary measures change, the importer of record should obtain a written classification opinion from a licensed customs broker before shipment.

National standards are administered by the national standards organisation, which adopts and publishes Lebanese standards and, for many categories, references European and international standards. Where a machine category requires conformity documentation, we supply the declarations, drawings, material certificates and test reports the importer of record needs, and coordinate directly on the submission.

Documentation for a machinery consignment normally comprises a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, certificate of origin, the CE declaration of conformity, electrical schematics and general arrangement drawings, plus any product-specific certificates required for the conformity route. Arranging these before the goods leave the factory is the single most effective way to shorten clearance time.

Value added tax applies on import and is generally recoverable for registered taxpayers. We do not provide tax advice; the importer of record should confirm treatment with their own adviser.

Logistics & Shipping

Transport Modes and Ports

Sea freight is the standard mode for machinery from Shanghai to Lebanon, and cargo arrives through the Port of Beirut. Full container load suits single machines and packaged equipment and is generally the more economical choice from roughly 15 cubic metres upward. Less-than-container-load suits smaller orders and spare parts at a longer transit because of consolidation and deconsolidation. Air freight is reserved for urgent spare parts and small instruments, typically 6 to 8 days.

Transit from Shanghai to Beirut is typically 22 to 26 days subject to sailing schedules and port availability. Inland movement from the port to a plant in Beirut, Mount Lebanon or the Bekaa is a short road movement, which means a machine can be operational within roughly four to five weeks of release from the factory.

Packaging is specified for the full journey. Machines are crated with desiccant and vapour barrier where electrical components require it, lifting points are marked on the crate, and the packing list identifies each case so that the receiving team can plan handling and the access route. Because inland distances are short, handling effort at destination is usually concentrated at the port and at the plant gate.

Insurance is arranged on the CIF value at the buyer's option. We provide the invoice and packing details needed for the policy, but the insurance contract is between the buyer and the insurer.

Local Service & Support

Warranty, Training and Spare Parts

The standard warranty is 3 years from shipment or from commissioning, whichever the contract specifies. Coverage addresses defects in materials and workmanship under normal operating conditions and in accordance with the operating manual. It does not cover wear parts consumed in normal operation, damage arising from operation outside the specified parameters, damage from unsuitable raw materials, or the consequences of unauthorised repair. Exclusions are stated explicitly in the contract so that there is no ambiguity if a claim arises.

Commissioning covers mechanical alignment, electrical connection checks, guarding verification, a dry run and then a wet run with the customer's own material. Operator training is delivered on site during commissioning and covers start-up and shutdown sequences, grinding media loading, roll or clearance setting, cleaning between grades, and the routine checks that prevent the most common failures. A signed commissioning report closes the handover.

Spare parts are the practical determinant of uptime, and the short inland distances in Lebanon make a stocked local spare-parts kit unusually effective. We hold wear parts and the components most likely to be needed within the first years of service, and dispatch worldwide within 24 hours of a confirmed order. Each machine is supplied with a recommended spare-parts list distinguishing items to hold locally from items that can be ordered on demand.

For plants that prefer a single local point of contact, we work with regional partners and will introduce the partner covering your area during the quotation stage.
