Vertical pin-type bead mill for batch and semi-continuous nano and fine grinding of low-to-medium viscosity materials.

The PZL Vertical Pin Type Bead Mill is a vertical, pin-agitated wet grinding mill built for batch and semi-continuous production of low-to-medium viscosity materials down to the nanometre range. Its vertical pin agitator drives forced media displacement through an inner and outer peg annulus, giving stable, repeatable fineness from lab scale to industrial batches. POLYC supplies the mill with a jacketed chamber for cooling, centrifugal media separation and a top discharge screen for fast, contamination-free changeovers.

A flexible mill for fine and nano grinding of low-to-medium viscosity products where quick changeover and controlled temperature matter more than maximum continuous throughput.
For inkjet, gravure and LCD filter ink, the vertical pin mill reaches 5–15 µm at viscosity up to 1,000 mPa·s. The open-top design and top discharge screen keep colour and paste grades clean between runs.
Organic and inorganic pigments, including titanium dioxide, iron oxides and phthalocyanines, are dispersed to 5–15 µm with wide viscosity tolerance. Low media consumption keeps high-value pastes cost-effective.
For suspension concentrates and suspo-emulsions, the mill delivers D90 ≤5 µm. Centrifugal media separation avoids screen clogging and protects sensitive formulations during longer cycles.
Creams, lotions and pigment dispersions are processed to ≤15 µm under hygienic, easy-to-clean design. The jacketed chamber holds temperature steady for heat-sensitive emulsions.
Suspensions and gels are ground to 5–20 µm with stainless-steel or hardened-alloy contact parts built for validated cleaning and controlled batch records.
Glaze and body slurries, plus pigment and filler dispersions for coating bases, are ground to 5–15 µm. The vertical, compact layout fits plants with limited floor space.
| Industry | Target Fineness | Recommended Configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Printing Inks & Electronic Pastes | 5–15 µm | Vertical pin mill, 0.5–1.0 mm zirconia |
| Architectural Paints | 5–20 µm | Jacketed batch, 1.0–2.0 mm media |
| Pigment Pastes / Masterbatch | 5–15 µm | Wide viscosity tolerance |
| Agrochemical SC / Suspo-emulsion | D90 ≤5 µm | Centrifugal media separation |
| Cosmetics | ≤15 µm | Hygienic design, SS / hardened alloy |
| Pharmaceuticals | 5–20 µm | SS contact parts, validated cleaning |
| Food | 5–20 µm | Hygienic design |
| Textile Printing Paste | 5–15 µm | Pigment dispersion |
| Ceramics (glaze / body) | 5–15 µm | Slurry grinding |
| Construction Chemicals | 5–20 µm | Pigment & filler dispersion |
Low-to-medium viscosity up to about 1,000 mPa·s → vertical pin mill. Higher-viscosity pastes in the tens of thousands of cP are better served by a horizontal bead mill or a basket mill.
The 5–100 L chamber covers lab to batch production, while the PZL model range (0.2–30 L) scales up to a 0.5–1,000 L production line. Match chamber size to your typical batch volume.
Choose batch or semi-continuous when changeovers are frequent; nano-scale targets need 0.2–1.5 mm media. Final particle size and throughput are confirmed with a representative material trial.

Description
The PZL Vertical Pin Type Bead Mill is a vertical, pin-agitator wet grinding mill designed for batch and semi-continuous production of low-to-medium viscosity materials. Forced media displacement through an inner and outer peg annulus drives grinding from the lab scale up to industrial batches, with a top product inlet and removable protection screen for simple, contamination-free operation. The mill is built around a vertical pin agitator with a pre-dispersing zone and internal media recirculation. Media separation is by centrifuging, and the rotor, outer and inner stator plus the bottom are efficiently cooled by a jacketed chamber. Power is input by the forced displacement of 0.2 to 1.5 mm media, giving stable fineness across a wide viscosity range. Typical duties include LCD filter ink, inkjet and electronic pastes, pigments, agrochemicals and other fine or nano-scale slurries. Because final particle size and throughput depend on formulation, bead material and process conditions, POLYC confirms performance with a representative material trial before final selection.

Equipment Guidance
A vertical pin type bead mill uses a vertical, pin-studded agitator shaft immersed in a stationary, jacketed chamber. The vertical layout gives a compact footprint and a top discharge screen for fast media removal and cleaning. A horizontal bead mill places the grinding chamber horizontally and is generally tuned for higher continuous throughput. The vertical pin mill is the better fit when your runs are batch or semi-continuous and changeovers are frequent.
The PZL series is rated for a fineness range of 1 to 15 micron, and with small 0.2 to 1.5 mm zirconia media it reaches the nanometre range for suitable low-to-medium viscosity products. Exact particle size depends on the material, bead size and residence time, so POLYC confirms it with a representative material trial before final sizing.
It is designed for low-to-medium viscosity materials, typically up to about 1,000 mPa.s (1,000 cP). For higher-viscosity pastes in the tens of thousands of cP, a horizontal bead mill or a basket mill is usually the better choice. The jacketed chamber keeps temperature stable during longer grinding cycles.
Power is input by the forced displacement of media through an inner and outer peg annulus, with a pre-dispersing zone and internal media recirculation. Separation is by centrifuging, so there is no fine screen to clog; screen or gap separator options are matched to the media size you use. Product discharges through a removable protection screen on top of the inner stator.
Chamber volume spans 5 to 100 L with motor power from 7.5 to 45 kW. The PZL model range (0.2 to 30 L) scales the same vertical pin principle up to a 0.5 to 1,000 L production line, so the machine covers lab, pilot and industrial batch duties.
Yes. The open-top chamber design simplifies media charging, inspection and cleaning, and the top protection screen is removable without draining the mill. That makes it practical for facilities running many colours or product types where downtime between batches matters.
It serves printing inks and electronic pastes (including inkjet, gravure and LCD filter ink), pigment pastes and masterbatches, agrochemical suspension concentrates and suspo-emulsions, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, textiles and ceramics. These are typically low-to-medium viscosity fine or nano grinding duties.
Start from your material viscosity, target fineness and batch volume, then choose chamber size and bead size (0.2 to 1.5 mm for nano targets). Tell POLYC your material and process so engineering can confirm power, cooling duty and separator type. Final particle size and throughput are validated with a representative material trial before manufacture.
