Process Engineering
Grinding beads receive kinetic energy from the mill agitator.
Collisions and shear between beads and particles break agglomerates and reduce particle size.
Bead density, size, roundness, and wear resistance determine energy transfer, separation behavior, and contamination risk.
Equipment Benefits
High density transfers grinding energy efficiently.
Good roundness and smooth surfaces promote stable mill operation.
Acid and alkali resistance suit a broad range of formulations.
High toughness and low wear reduce bead breakage and contamination.

Equipment Guidance
Bead diameter range is 0.05 - 3.0 mm depending on application. Yttria-stabilized zirconia beads are supplied in the standard size steps used by bead mills, with density and hardness matched to the mill type and the required fineness.
High-purity yttria-stabilized beads are specified where contamination control matters, such as battery materials and electronic ceramics. Wear rate is confirmed against your mill duty rather than quoted as a single figure.
Bead selection follows the mill separator opening, the target fineness and the material being ground. Typical duties cover Architectural Paints, Industrial Coatings, Printing Inks.
Zirconia gives the best balance of density, wear resistance and contamination control for wet grinding. Glass is cheaper but wears faster; steel is denser but can contaminate light-coloured products. POLYC recommends from your fineness target and contamination limit.
Service life depends on mill speed, product abrasiveness and media size. Beads are normally replaced as a batch when the grinding efficiency drops rather than on a fixed interval.
