Plaster and Gypsum Mixing Equipment: Gentle Blending and Dust Control
Plaster and gypsum blends are sensitive to both mechanical action and dust. Lightweight aggregates break down under high shear, and fine gypsum becomes airborne at every transfer point, so the mixer and the charging system have to be designed together.
Plaster production needs gentle blending to protect lightweight aggregates and dust control at charging, because gypsum dust is the main environmental and operator issue on this line.
Process route
Plaster shares the powder route with dry mortar, but tolerates less shear and generates more dust.
- Receiving and storage. Gypsum, lime and lightweight aggregates are stored separately; hygroscopic components need protection from moisture.
- Dosing. Bulk components are weighed in sequence; the lightweight aggregate dose often needs its own handling arrangement because of its low bulk density.
- Gentle blending. Ribbon or non-gravity mixers blend without high shear, preserving the aggregate structure that gives the product its workability and coverage.
- Dust-controlled charging and packing. Enclosed charging and zero-dust systems keep gypsum dust out of the workplace; packing is enclosed and vented.
Equipment selection
| Stage | Equipment | What it decides |
|---|---|---|
| Blending | Ribbon mixer / non-gravity mixer / double cone mixer | Aggregate integrity |
| Lightweight aggregate handling | Dedicated dosing and conveying | Segregation and volume accuracy |
| Charging | Zero-dust charging system | Operator exposure |
| Packing | Enclosed packer with venting | Dust and pack accuracy |
Specification notes
Why gentle blending matters
Lightweight aggregates are fragile. High-shear or high-speed blending crushes them, which changes yield, coverage and the finished surface.
Dust as a design constraint
Gypsum dust affects both compliance and operator health. Enclosing the charging point and submerging or wetting the powder is more effective than extraction alone.

Frequently asked questions
Which mixer is best for plaster?
Ribbon, non-gravity or double cone mixers blend gently, which protects lightweight aggregates. High-shear machines are not appropriate for these blends.
How do you control gypsum dust?
At source: enclosed charging, zero-dust charging systems, bin venting and enclosed packing. Extraction is a secondary measure.
Can plaster and dry mortar share equipment?
Often yes, because both are powder blends. The constraint is aggregate handling and dust control rather than the mixer itself.
Does lightweight aggregate change mixer selection?
Yes. Low bulk density and fragile particles change both the required volume and the acceptable shear, which usually rules out high-speed blending.
