Dry Mortar Mixing Equipment: Ribbon, Paddle and Plough Shear Mixers
Dry mortar production is a powder-blending problem: cement, sand, fillers and additives must be distributed evenly and discharged without segregation. POLYC MACHINE supplies ribbon mixers, paddle blenders and plough shear mixers, with dosing, conveying and dust control sized to the plant.
Dry mortar is blended in a ribbon, paddle or plough shear mixer at the batch volume the plant needs. The line around the mixer — dosing, conveying, charging and packing — decides real output more than mixer speed does.
Process route
A dry mortar line is built around four stages, and the mixer is only one of them.
- Raw material receiving and storage. Cement, sand and fillers are stored in silos or hoppers. Sand is normally dried and screened before blending, because moisture and oversize particles cause segregation and lumps in the finished bag.
- Dosing. Major components are weighed by belt or hopper scale, minor additives on a separate small scale. Accuracy on the smallest component sets the achievable formula consistency.
- Blending. Ribbon mixers give a gentle, uniform blend; paddle blenders and plough shear mixers shorten cycle time at higher fill levels. Lightweight aggregates need lower shear to avoid breakdown.
- Charging, packing and dust control. Product is discharged to a buffer hopper or directly to the packer. Dust is controlled at charging and packing points by enclosure, venting and extraction.
Equipment selection
| Stage | Equipment | What it decides |
|---|---|---|
| Dosing | Belt scale, hopper scale, minor-additive scale | Formula consistency |
| Blending | Ribbon mixer / paddle blender / plough shear mixer | Uniformity, cycle time, aggregate integrity |
| Conveying | Screw conveyor, bucket elevator, pneumatic transfer | Segregation risk and layout |
| Packing | Valve-bag or open-mouth packer | Pack accuracy and dust |
| Dust control | Enclosed charging, bin vent, filter | Emissions and operator exposure |
Specification notes
Why ribbon mixers suit mortar
The ribbon geometry moves material along the trough and back, producing a uniform blend without high shear. That protects lightweight aggregates and keeps the cycle predictable.
When to choose plough shear
Plough shear mixers run at higher fill levels and shorter cycles, which suits plants that need throughput and can accept more mechanical action on the solids.

Frequently asked questions
Which mixer is used for dry mortar production?
Ribbon, paddle or plough shear, chosen by batch size, lightweight aggregate content and additive shear sensitivity.
Why does dry mortar segregate after blending?
Segregation usually comes from particle-size or density differences combined with drop heights and vibration during conveying and packing. Reducing free-fall and avoiding over-blending after the mix is uniform both help.
Can the same line make tile adhesive and plaster?
Yes, if dosing holds accuracy for the smallest additive and cleaning between recipes is practical. The powder route is shared; only the formula changes.
How is sand moisture handled?
Sand is dried before blending. Residual moisture causes lumps, inaccurate weighing and bag swelling, so drying is a process requirement rather than an option.
