Powder Mixers Equipment
Powder mixing is the step that decides blend uniformity, dissolution and final product consistency. POLYC MACHINE supplies industrial powder mixers and blenders - ribbon blenders, paddle mixers, plough-share (plough shear) mixers, V-shape mixers and double-cone blenders - for chemical, food, pharmaceutical and mineral powder processes. Each design suits a different duty: ribbon and paddle mixers handle free-flowing powders and minor-additive blending; plough-share mixers with optional chopper intensify dispersion and lump breaking for cohesive or pasty materials; V-shape and double-cone units give gentle, low-residue blending for fragile or high-value powders. We select machine type, working volume, shaft speed and discharging method from your bulk density, particle size, moisture and target mixing homogeneity, and we can add heating, cooling, vacuum or liquid-spray for combined processes. Tell us your material and batch size and we will recommend a mixer configuration and confirm lead time.

Powder mixing: four parameters that decide the machine
Blending dry powders looks simple until the blend does not hold. Four parameters decide which mixer geometry suits your material — and none of them is nameplate power.
- Particle size and density spread. Wide distributions and density differences drive segregation. Gentle tumbling geometries (V-shape, double cone) handle free-flowing powders with density spread; intensive agitators (ribbon, paddle, plough shear) handle cohesive and multi-component blends where ingredients must be actively folded together.
- Mixing intensity versus attrition. More energy is not automatically better. High-intensity plough shear and non-gravity mixers break agglomerates fast but generate heat and attrition; ribbon and tumbling machines are gentler on fragile crystals, flakes and fibres.
- Batch size. Laboratory and pilot volumes sit at the bottom of each range; production batches run from hundreds of litres to 30,000 L. Oversizing a mixer for a small batch is as wrong as undersizing for a large one.
- Discharge and cleaning. Complete discharge, access for cleaning and changeover time between formulas decide real throughput in multi-product plants. A mixer that leaves 5% heel in the vessel is a contamination and yield problem, not a rounding error.
What this range covers
Six platforms cover dry-powder blending from 5 L laboratory vessels to 30,000 L production batches, across chemical, food, pharmaceutical, building-material and agrochemical duties.
- Ribbon Mixer — horizontal helical-ribbon agitator for convective blending of dry powders, granules and pastes at 100–12,000 L. The standard general-purpose powder mixer, with liquid-addition capability for wet-granulation duties.
- Horizontal Paddle Blender (WLDH series) — heavy-duty paddle blending for dry mortar, wall putty, tile adhesive and building-material powders at 100–30,000 L, sized for high-volume construction-materials production.
- Horizontal Plough Shear Mixer (LDH series) — plough-shaped agitators creating intense mechanical fluidisation for rapid high-intensity blending at 100–20,000 L, including pastes and difficult cohesive powders.
- Horizontal Non-Gravity Mixer (WZ series) — counter-rotating agitators create a weightless mixing zone where particles move freely in all directions at 100–30,000 L, giving fast uniformity with mild segregation control.
- V-Shape Powder Mixer (V series) — gentle tumbling in a rotating V-shaped vessel at 5–2,000 L, for high-purity blending of fragile or abrasive materials where attrition must be minimised.
- Double Cone Drum Mixer (DCM series) — tumbling in a rotating conical vessel at 100–5,000 L for gentle homogeneous blending of dry and wet powders, with complete discharge suited to high-value batches.
Typical process routes
- Dry mortar and putty route. Paddle blender or plough shear mixer at production volume, with metered liquid addition for binders and additives. These plants run large batches of abrasive material — wear-resistant construction and easy access decide availability.
- Food, pharmaceutical and fine-chemical route. V-shape or double-cone tumbling for gentle, high-purity blending of free-flowing ingredients with density spread, where attrition and heel retention must be minimised.
- Chemical multi-component route. Ribbon mixer for convective blending of powders and granules with controlled liquid addition, the standard workhorse for multi-product chemical plants.
- Difficult and cohesive route. Plough shear or non-gravity geometry where ingredients resist folding — pigments, fibres, sticky additives — and cycle time matters more than gentleness.
Comparing the mixer geometries
| Machine | Mechanism | Capacity | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ribbon Mixer | Convective ribbon flow | 100–12,000 L | General-purpose dry blending with liquid addition |
| Paddle Blender (WLDH) | Lift and fold | 100–30,000 L | Dry mortar, putty and building-material powders at volume |
| Plough Shear Mixer (LDH) | Intensive fluidisation | 100–20,000 L | Fast blending of cohesive powders and pastes |
| Non-Gravity Mixer (WZ) | Counter-rotating, weightless zone | 100–30,000 L | Fast uniformity with mild segregation control |
| V-Shape Mixer | Gentle tumbling | 5–2,000 L | High-purity, fragile or abrasive materials |
| Double Cone Mixer (DCM) | Tumbling, complete discharge | 100–5,000 L | Gentle blending of dry and wet powders, high-value batches |
Figures are the published capacity ranges for each platform, not guarantees. Blend uniformity is controlled by loading, tool geometry, mixing time and sampling — not by cycle length. A longer cycle can increase segregation, attrition or heat, so the endpoint must be defined by a repeatable sampling method on representative material at process temperature.
Frequently asked questions
Ribbon, paddle, plough shear or tumbling — how do I choose?
Start from the material, not the machine. Cohesive multi-component powders that resist folding need intensive agitators (plough shear, non-gravity). Free-flowing powders with density spread blend well in gentle tumbling machines (V-shape, double cone). General-purpose dry blending with liquid addition is the ribbon mixer's home ground. Our selection guide compares the three geometries on particle behaviour.
Which mixer suits dry mortar and wall putty?
The paddle blender (WLDH, 100–30,000 L) and plough shear mixer (LDH, 100–20,000 L) are built for these abrasive, high-volume building-material duties, with wear-resistant construction and metered liquid addition for binders and additives.
Which mixer is gentlest on fragile or high-value powders?
The V-shape mixer (5–2,000 L) tumbles rather than agitates, which minimises attrition on fragile crystals, flakes and fibres. The double-cone mixer (100–5,000 L) is similarly gentle and adds complete discharge, which matters when the batch is high-value.
Why does a longer mixing cycle not always improve the blend?
Because uniformity is controlled by loading, tool geometry, mixing time and sampling — and beyond the endpoint, more energy can increase segregation, attrition or heat. Define the endpoint with a repeatable laboratory method and repeat samples, and record the settings with each batch.
Can these mixers add liquids to a dry blend?
Yes. Ribbon mixers handle pastes and controlled liquid addition for wet-granulation duties, and the double-cone mixer is rated for both dry and wet powder blending. The paddle and plough shear machines handle pasty building-material formulations with high binder content.
What capacity range does the powder range cover?
From 5 L (V-shape) through to 30,000 L (paddle blender and non-gravity mixer), with ribbon at 100–12,000 L, plough shear at 100–20,000 L and double cone at 100–5,000 L. Match batch size to the middle of the working range, not the extremes.
How do I control segregation and dust?
Segregation is managed by geometry and endpoint discipline: gentle tumbling for density-spread materials, defined sampling to catch endpoint drift, and discharge sequence planned so the blend does not re-segregate on the way out. Dust control is a plant-level enclosure and extraction question we can advise on with the layout.
How should cleaning and changeover be planned?
Plan access and heel retention: the double-cone's complete discharge minimises heel, and tumbling machines are the easiest to clean between formulas. For multi-product plants, specify the cleaning access and changeover sequence with the machine, not after installation.
