How to choose the right machine
The catalogue is organised by machine family, but the choice is decided by the material. Four families cover almost every wet process: dispersers wet out and de-agglomerate powder, mills reduce particle size with grinding media, mixers handle high-viscosity pastes that will not flow through a mill, and emulsifiers create stable oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions with a rotor-stator.
Read the decision in that order. If the only job is to wet powder into a liquid, a high-speed disperser is the starting point. If a defined fineness (a D90 in microns, or a gloss target) must be held, add a bead mill — horizontal for continuous, basket for batch and frequent colour changes. If the product is a paste above roughly 50,000 cP, a planetary or multi-shaft mixer replaces the mill. If the product is an emulsion, a high-shear emulsifier does the work. Most real lines use more than one family in series.
Viscosity, batch size, colour-change frequency and the fineness you must hold decide the final configuration. The table below maps common goals to a starting point; the comparison pages explain the trade-offs when two options still look viable.
Match your material to a starting point
| Your material / goal | Viscosity | Recommended family | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wet out powder, no fineness target | Low–medium | High-speed disperser | Premix step before milling |
| Defined fineness (D90) | Low–medium | Bead mill / basket mill | Horizontal continuous, basket batch |
| High-viscosity paste, sealant, adhesive | High (>50,000 cP) | Planetary / multi-shaft mixer | Dispersion plus wall sweep |
| Pigment paste, very high loading | Very high | Three-roll mill | Solvent-free, heat-sensitive pastes |
| Oil/water or water/oil emulsion | Low–medium | High-shear emulsifier | Rotor-stator, in-tank or inline |
| Dry powder blending | Powder (no liquid) | Ribbon / plough blender | Not a wet process |
| Complete production line | — | Integrated line | Premix → mill → let-down → fill |
Product questions
Which machine do I need for my material?
Start from viscosity, target fineness and capacity. Low-viscosity wetting points to a high-speed disperser; a defined fineness points to a bead or basket mill; a high-viscosity paste points to a planetary or multi-shaft mixer; an emulsion points to a rotor-stator emulsifier. Most lines use more than one family.
Bead mill or basket mill — which should I choose?
A horizontal bead mill gives the finest, most uniform result and suits continuous production. A basket mill premixes and grinds in one batch vessel, which suits small batches and frequent colour changes. Viscosity and batch pattern usually decide it.
What viscosity can each machine handle?
High-speed dispersers work best at low to medium viscosity; bead mills need the product to flow through the chamber, so they are used at low to medium viscosity too. High-viscosity mixers are built for pastes and sealants, up to roughly 1,500,000 cP.
What fineness can your mills reach?
Bead mills in the range typically grind from around 20 microns down to about 1 micron, and sub-micron with fine media. Basket mills suit batch work in the low-micron range; three-roll mills handle very high-viscosity pastes.
Do you supply complete production lines?
Yes. We integrate premixing, milling, let-down, filtration, filling and controls into a complete line, sized to your batch or throughput target, including solvent and hazardous-area configurations.
What information do you need to quote?
Material or product type, viscosity or solids loading, target fineness (D90 or gloss), capacity (litres per batch or tonnes per year), batch or continuous operation, and any constraints such as space, utilities, ATEX, hygiene or corrosion.
