Process requirements and material challenges

Coatings and inks rely on consistent pigment wetting and stable dispersion. A poor premix can lengthen milling time, make color control difficult and increase the risk of retained agglomerates. The engineering target is a repeatable route that fits the resin system, pigment loading, viscosity and batch schedule.

Equipment should be selected around both product quality and operating practicality: batch size, color-change frequency, cooling requirement, cleaning method and downstream filtration or filling all matter.

Typical production route

Pigment wet-out and dispersion

Use controlled addition and high-speed dispersion to wet pigments in the resin or liquid phase before fine grinding.

Fine grinding

A basket mill can be considered for integrated batch dispersion and grinding. The actual fineness target and pigment system determine the trial plan.

Letdown, filtration and filling

After grinding, adjust the batch to final viscosity and confirm filtration, transfer and packaging requirements.

Recommended equipment

A production recommendation should follow testing of the actual pigment, resin and solvent or water system. These equipment families provide a practical starting point.

Basket Mill

PZM Basket Mill is a multi-functional submersible wet grinding mill for batch processing. It possesses both grinding and dispersing function. The optimized design for basket mill ensures that your materials pass through the high density dispersion zone within the milling chamber at a high frequency, with much higher grinding efficiency than traditional media milling systems. Our PZM basket mill requires less clean-up and a reduction in waste solvents. Premixing, dispersion, and grinding are all completed in a single vessel, helping reduce material transfer losses and cleaning time.

Double Shafts High Speed Disperser

Our PDH Double Shafts Disperser is also called High Speed Dissolver which has double dispersing shafts are suitable for producing paint, ink, coating, dyestuff, paper making and so on in chemical industry. The PDH Double Shafts Disperser can be used for wet dispersing and mixing liquid-solid material. Non-grade speed adjustment by frequency converters, hydraulic elevating, working steadily, use and maintenance expediently.

Selection checklist

Decision pointWhat to confirm before quotation
Pigment systemPigment type, loading, feed agglomerates, target fineness and color-strength expectation.
Vehicle systemResin, solvent or water phase, viscosity profile and temperature sensitivity.
Production patternBatch size, color changes, cleaning time, shift pattern and throughput requirement.
FinishingLetdown, filtration precision, filling method and quality-control checks.

Final capacity, equipment configuration, contact materials, seals, cooling duty and control scope should be confirmed against the actual formulation and operating conditions. This prevents selection by a headline parameter alone and gives the project team a defensible basis for pilot work or production scale-up.

Frequently asked questions

When is a basket mill suitable for coatings?

A basket mill is often considered for flexible batch production because it combines dispersion and grinding in one vessel.

Why is pre-dispersion important?

Consistent wet-out reduces persistent pigment agglomerates and gives the grinding stage a more uniform feed.

What should be tested during selection?

Share the formulation, target fineness, viscosity, batch size, cooling need and required production rate.
